These terms and conditions ("Terms") govern your use of the website sortedcars.co.uk ("Website") and the consumer services provided by Sorted Cars Ltd ("we", "us", "our"), a company registered in England and Wales under company number 17134462, with registered office at 82a James Carter Road, Mildenhall, Bury St. Edmunds, England, IP28 7DE. Our ICO registration number is ZC181175.
These Terms cover our Free Check and our Paid Checks. Our Trader Reports service for the motor trade is supplied under separate Trade Terms and is not covered by this document.
Contact us through our Contact Us form.
We provide free vehicle checks using data from the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service and the DVSA MOT History API. This includes basic vehicle details, tax status, MOT status, MOT history, and ULEZ/Clean Air Zone compliance information. The Free Check is advisory only, is provided free of charge and without warranty, and does not include any Data Guarantee. The rights described in section 8 apply to our paid services.
Paid Checks provide additional vehicle data from specialist third-party providers — including Experian, Marketcheck, Percayso and UK Vehicle Data — which we reach through OneAutoAPI. The supplier behind each section is named in the report builder.
Reports are sold on a build-your-own basis: you choose the individual sections you want. Sections available include outstanding finance, mileage and clocking, stolen-vehicle (PNC), insurance write-off / salvage marker, condition and damage history, keeper and owner history, plate and colour change history, safety recall, factory build sheet, vehicle identity, car tax (VED), current valuation, price prediction, desirability and demand, and the Experian Full Provenance Report (also called AutoCheck).
What each report contains. Each purchased report includes the full data we receive from our providers for that check, except any items our providers licence for business use only and vehicle identification numbers, which are partially masked in line with DVLA rules.
Records and estimates. Some sections give you records — what a source holds about the vehicle, such as outstanding finance, stolen markers or MOT history. Others give you estimates — figures calculated from market data and published rules, such as valuations, price predictions, demand indicators, and ULEZ or Clean Air Zone compliance. Estimates are opinions produced with reasonable care from the data available, not records: a different valuer may reach a different figure, and the position can change. Where an official checker exists — for example the scheme operator’s own ULEZ checker — that is the definitive source.
Prices. The price of each section, and the total for your order, are shown before you pay. We never charge you for a section we cannot deliver: if a data provider cannot supply a section you ordered, we refund that section’s price automatically to your original payment method and email you to confirm it — you do not need to ask. The rest of your report is unaffected.
The Data Guarantee. The Experian Full Provenance Report can be taken on its own, or with an Experian Data Guarantee at a range of cover levels (for example cover up to £10,000, £20,000 or £30,000). The report data is the same either way; the cover level is what changes. The sections available, the cover levels and the current prices are those shown in the report builder at the time of purchase.
You must be at least 18 years old and resident in the United Kingdom to use our paid services. By using our Services, you confirm that you meet these requirements.
By entering a registration mark or VIN you confirm that you have a legitimate interest in that vehicle: you own it or are its registered keeper, it is offered or intended for sale, you are considering buying it, you need to confirm its identity, you provide a service relating to it (such as repair, servicing, insurance or finance), or you have another connection to the vehicle that gives you a legitimate reason to check its records, which you can describe if we ask.
You must not use our Services to obtain information about a vehicle in which you have no such interest. We may decline or cancel a check, refunding anything you have paid, where we reasonably believe no legitimate interest exists.
You must create an account to buy a Paid Check. Accounts are created using a one-time link sent to your email address — there is no password to set or remember. Some free features also require an account.
Because your account is secured by access to your email rather than a password, keeping that email account secure is what keeps your SortedCars account secure. You are responsible for activity that occurs under your account.
All prices are displayed in pounds sterling (GBP) and include VAT where applicable. Payments are processed securely by Stripe. We do not store your full payment card details on our servers. You will need an account to complete a purchase; your Reports are delivered there.
We do not operate subscriptions or recurring billing. Every purchase is a single one-off payment for the sections you select, at the price shown at checkout. We will never charge your card again without you placing a new order.
We reserve the right to change our prices at any time, but changes will not affect orders already placed and paid for.
The Data Guarantee applies only to the Experian Full Provenance Report (AutoCheck) when it is purchased with a Data Guarantee cover level. It does not apply to a Full Provenance Report bought without a cover level, and it does not apply to individual data sections bought on their own.
Provenance data is provided by Experian, and where the Data Guarantee applies it is provided by Experian under Experian’s own terms; the version of those terms that applies to your report is the version in force on the date your report is produced, which we also link from the report builder. The Data Guarantee is governed entirely by Experian’s terms, and Experian determines eligibility and the outcome of any claim. We are the data reseller, not the guarantor: we do not operate or pay a guarantee, and any claim is made to Experian under Experian’s guarantee terms.
Our paid services constitute digital content under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. As such, they must be of satisfactory quality, fit for any particular purpose you made known to us before you bought, and as described. If our digital content is faulty, you have the right to a repair or replacement, or a full or partial refund where appropriate.
If our digital content damages a device or other digital content belonging to you, and this was caused by our failure to use reasonable care and skill, you are entitled to a repair or to compensation.
Nothing in these Terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
Under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, you have a 14-day right to cancel from the date of purchase.
However, because our Reports are digital content supplied immediately, you will be asked at checkout to consent to us supplying your Report straight away, and to acknowledge that this ends your right to cancel once supply has begun. Your receipt email confirms both.
If you have given that consent and acknowledgement, and your Report has been supplied, you will not be entitled to a refund under the cooling-off period. This applies only to your 14-day cooling-off right. It does not affect your right to a repair, replacement or refund under section 8 if the Report is faulty, incomplete or not as described, or your automatic refund for any section we could not deliver (section 3.2).
Your Report is delivered when it becomes available in your account, whether or not the emailed copy reaches you. You can re-open it there for 30 days after purchase, and you can download or print your own copy from the report page at any time during that period. See our Privacy Policy for how long we store your data.
Before supply begins — for example if payment has gone through but the Report has not yet been produced — you can cancel using our model cancellation form or our Contact Us form. Any other clear statement telling us you want to cancel also counts. See our Refund Policy for full details.
10.1 We source vehicle data from third-party providers including the DVLA, DVSA, and the specialist suppliers we reach through OneAutoAPI. While we take reasonable steps to ensure accuracy, we cannot guarantee that all information is complete, accurate, or up to date.
10.2 We do not create, verify, amend or maintain the vehicle data contained in our Reports. We transmit the data returned by the relevant supplier at the moment your request is made, and a Report is a snapshot of what was available at that time. There may be a delay between an event being recorded by a source and it appearing in a Report. Where a supplier’s records are incomplete, out of date or incorrect, that will be reflected in your Report. A Report describes the vehicle only as at the date and time it was produced: it is not a statement about the vehicle’s status at any later date, and we are not responsible for anything that changes after that point.
Some parts of a Report are calculated by us rather than transmitted from a supplier — for example ULEZ and Clean Air Zone compliance, and the road tax bands we display, which we work out from the vehicle’s recorded data and published rules. Published rules and rates change, and the relevant authority’s own checker or published rates are the definitive source. We take reasonable care in these calculations, and section 8 applies to them.
10.3 A Report is information about a vehicle’s records and market position. It is not advice, and not a recommendation to buy or not buy. We recommend that you do not rely solely on our Report when deciding whether to buy a vehicle, and that you make independent arrangements to assess the performance, condition, safety and legality of any vehicle you are looking to buy. A Report is not a substitute for a professional vehicle inspection.
Where a Report shows a serious marker — for example that a vehicle is recorded as stolen or written off — we will say so plainly and tell you what we think you should do. That is our honest reading of the supplier’s data, not professional advice, and the underlying record is one we do not verify. If you believe a marker is wrong, please contact us.
10.4 Any information we provide in connection with the Services is for general information purposes only. You are responsible for any opinions, conclusions or actions taken on the basis of a Report. Nothing we provide constitutes professional advice. This does not affect your rights under section 8.
10.5 Information pages. Our Website also carries free information pages — for example MOT statistics, number-plate guides, buying tips and guides. These are general information, not advice. In particular:
In this section, "Services" means our Free Check and Paid Checks. Trader Reports are supplied under our separate Trade Terms and this section does not apply to them.
What you may do with your Report. When you buy a Report we grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to download, store, print and use it for your own purposes connected with the vehicle it describes — including showing or sending it to anyone directly involved in your purchase, sale, insurance, financing or repair of that vehicle.
What you must not do. You agree not to:
All content on the Website, including text, graphics, logos, software and Reports, is owned by or licensed to Sorted Cars Ltd and is protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. Subject to the licence granted in section 12, you may not reproduce, distribute or create derivative works from our content without our written permission.
Public sector information on the Website — for example DVSA MOT test data and DVLA published material — is reproduced under the Open Government Licence v3.0 and is not subject to this restriction. Our own calculations, text and presentation remain ours.
Our Services depend on third-party providers, including public sources (DVLA, DVSA), the specialist data suppliers we reach through OneAutoAPI, and the infrastructure and payment providers we use to run the site. The current list is set out in the "Third-Party Data Processors" section of our Privacy Policy. Your use of those providers’ own services is subject to their terms. We are not responsible for the availability, accuracy or performance of third-party services.
Placing an order. You pick the sections you want, confirm the vehicle, give the consent described in section 9, and pay. Every step is shown on screen before you pay, and you can review, change or remove anything in your basket right up until the moment you pay. Nothing is charged and nothing is ordered until you complete payment — that is the point the contract is made.
After you pay. We email you a receipt confirming your order, your consent to us supplying the Report immediately, and your acknowledgement that this ends your right to cancel, together with the date you agreed them. We keep a record of your order and those consents for the retention period stated in our Privacy Policy. Your receipt email is your copy.
Language. We offer and conclude contracts in English only.
We may update these Terms from time to time. The version of these Terms in force when you place an order applies to that order; later changes do not affect it.
If we make a material change, we will post the updated Terms on this page and, the next time you sign in, ask you to review and accept them before you continue to use your account. Minor corrections that do not affect your rights — such as typographical fixes or updated contact details — take effect when posted. The updated version will always be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
These Terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you also keep the benefit of any mandatory consumer protections under the law of your home nation, and you may bring proceedings in its courts.
If you have a complaint, please raise it first through our Contact Us form.
