Accessibility Statement

This statement applies to sortedcars.co.uk, operated by Sorted Cars Ltd ("we", "us", "our"), a company registered in England and Wales under company number 17134462. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website, including disabled people.
1. The Standard We Aim to Meet
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2, Level AA. That is the benchmark used across UK public services, and we hold ourselves to it even though we are a private company: the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018 do not apply to us. Our duties as a service provider come from the Equality Act 2010.
2. What We Have Built In
- Every page declares its language as English (en-GB) and is built from semantic HTML — real headings, lists and landmarks — so a screen reader can announce the structure of a page rather than read a wall of text.
- Keyboard focus is always visible. Any control you reach with the Tab key shows an outline, and we do not suppress that outline for keyboard users.
- Every chart on our MOT statistics pages has a "view this chart as a table" control directly beneath it, which reveals the same figures as text. The charts themselves are marked up so a screen reader announces an image with a description, instead of reading out drawing instructions.
- Text and chart colours on the statistics pages have been measured against the WCAG 2.2 AA contrast thresholds.
- Our legal pages and statistics pages reflow down to a 320-pixel-wide screen without horizontal scrolling; wide tables scroll inside their own box rather than dragging the whole page sideways.
3. Where This Website Falls Short
We would rather tell you what does not work than claim more than we can stand behind. As at the date above, we know about the following:
- There is no "skip to main content" link. If you navigate by keyboard or screen reader, you currently have to move through the header navigation on every page before you reach the content. This does not meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.1, and it is the first item on our list to fix.
- Our check and report tools need JavaScript. The free car check and the report builder are interactive and will not work with JavaScript turned off, and there is no non-JavaScript alternative yet. If that affects you, contact us — we can run a check for you and send you the results.
- We have not finished testing every page with a screen reader. The statistics pages and the legal pages have been checked. The report output has been spot-checked for keyboard use but not tested end to end with assistive technology.
- Colour contrast has been measured systematically on the statistics pages only. The rest of the site uses the same palette but has not been re-tested page by page against WCAG 2.2 AA.
We fix these as we find them, and we update this page when something on the list closes.
4. Telling Us About a Problem
If you find something on this website you cannot use, or you think we are not meeting the standard above, please tell us. You do not need to know the technical reason — describing what happened is enough.
It helps if you can tell us the address of the page, what you were trying to do, and what device or assistive technology you were using — but please send it anyway if you cannot.
We will reply within 5 working days.
5. Asking for Content in a Different Format
If you need something from this website in a different format — a report's figures as a plain table, larger text, or the content of a page sent to you another way — ask us and we will provide it free of charge.
6. Getting Help to Use Your Device
AbilityNet publishes free advice on making your computer, phone or tablet easier to use if you have a disability.
7. How We Test, and Our Current Position
We test with automated checking tools and with manual keyboard and screen-reader passes on the pages named in section 2. On that basis this website is partially compliant with WCAG 2.2 AA, because of the issues listed in section 3.
