Selling your car privately, without the headaches

A private sale usually beats a trade-in on price, but the margin only survives if the sale goes smoothly. Preparation does most of the work: gather the V5C logbook, service records and MOT certificates before you list, and price against cars actually for sale near you — not against what you paid. An honest advert with clear photos of the car's flaws attracts fewer but far more serious buyers.

Payment is where private sellers get hurt. Release the car only once the money is cleared in your bank account — not when a payment confirmation email arrives, and not against a cheque that hasn't cleared. Bank transfer is the safest common method; meet at your bank for large cash sums. Be wary of buyers who overpay and ask for the difference back, or who push to use an escrow site you've never heard of.

When the deal is done, the DVLA side matters as much as the money. Transfer the keepership straight away — online is instant and the buyer needs the green slip (V5C/2) — and keep your own record of the buyer's details and the sale terms. Until the DVLA knows the car has changed hands, its speeding fines and parking penalties are still yours. The guides below cover each stage in detail.
